This is a handbook of top tips representing 18 years of practice in three different schools in a variety of different subjects . The handbook is accompanied by 18 years worth of** FREE** teaching resources which cover the delivery of French and German units of work in Geography and PSHCE developed in three different schools. The whole year courses supported by these materials helped to improve progress and attainment in each of the schools at GCSE even though they were only delivered in Years 7 and 8. There is also a transition unit for use in Year 6. The free resources are available on the** Learning through Languages UK **website hosted by Aston University. Learning through languages UK also provides free CLIL mondays events from 4.30-5.30 pm. On Oct 11th 2021 Judith Woodfield will lead one to introduce the resources which are currently in the process of being uploaded there. There are also talks by leading CLIL professionals and archive ones including one from 2020 where Judith Woodfield shows how the programmes improve outcomes.

These powerpoints contain links to video clips which provide student views about CLIL. They were filmed in two different schools in the UK as part of CLIL programmes . One programme lasted 10 years and the other 6 years. Both programmes contributed to improved progress and attainment by the students involved and shows in whole school improvement figures… Each programme was followed by all students in Year groups 7 and 8 as an entitlement. The clips show Geography, ICT and PHSE in FRench and German. Please read the copyright article which has been produced to accompany all of the CLIL materials produced by Judith Woodfield. OFSTED produced a good practice guide about one of these schools and this is also included . Judith Woodfield is on the advisory panel of Learning Through Languages UK. Her FREE resources are available in the resources section of the website. Copies of talks given on April 20th 2020 and October 11th 2021 are also available on the site in the “CLIL Mondays” section. CLIL mondays is a series of free talks by CLIL professionals and provides an opportunity for teachers involved in CLIL to share their good practice.

This report written in Oct 2023 shows the results of 3 schools where CLIL was used over a period of 18 years. It shows that each of these three schools had greater progress and attainment for CLIL cohorts. Before and after CLIL, cohorts performed less well. CLIL is also shown to be an inclusive strategy as disadvantaged students and those of all abilities performed better in CLIL cohorts. This report shows that MFL can be placed at the heart of school improvement , motivating both students and staff and solving some of the problems leading to current decline in the uptake of languages in the UK. Please send me a message in your review if you read this and have any thoughts about it . This has taken me 5 years to process and write, with help from Professor Do Coyle who has written the preface. Do, who is based at the University of Edinburgh is a leading expert on CLIL both nationally and internationally. There are two files , the smaller one is just the front cover , the main report is the larger file . Accompanying articles listed in the reference list of the report are available free of charge in another resource posted here.
